Cambodian PM Asks Two Ministries to Settle Complaints Against Trade Unions

AKP Phnom Penh, November 07, 2018 —

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has ordered the Ministries of Labour and Justice to settle complaints or legal procedures against trade unions so that they can work fully without legal pressure.

At a get-together with over 23,000 workers and employees from 20 factories and enterprises in Takeo province this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen instructed H.E. Ith Samheng, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training and H.E. Ang Vong Vathana, Minister of Justice to work on this issue. “Request the court to consider those cases, whether the charges [against trade unions] are not heard or withdrawn or stayed. This is the opening for union freedom so that they can work fully in Cambodia,” he underlined.

Anyway, this compromise does not cover criminal offences, said Samdech Techo Hun Sen, adding that this is not a pressure against trade unions and NGOs.

Currently, there are about 3,300 trade unions in Cambodia.
