France Reaffirms its Support for Cambodia

AKP Phnom Penh, September 19, 2018 —

H.E. Edouard Philippe, Prime Minister of the French Republic, has sent a letter to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, reaffirming his country’s support for Cambodia.

“As Cambodia begins a new chapter in its history, under the authority of the new government led by you, let me reaffirm France’s availability to be alongside your country to support the construction of a democratic and peaceful Cambodia with inclusive development,” said the French Premier in his letter dated Sept.17, but distributed to the media yesterday evening.

France will support the Cambodian Prime Minister’s efforts to pursue an open and constructive dialogue with various actors in politics, civil society and the media, he stressed.

“In this regard, I welcome the recent developments concerning several opponents, most recently Mr. Kem Sokha, activist Tep Vanny, two former journalists of Radio Free Asia, Mr. Oum Chhin and Mr. Yeang Sothearin, and Mr. Moeun Tola, a human rights defender,” added H.E. Edouard Philippe, hoping that these actions could be followed by others.

“France and Cambodia are united by exceptionally strong historical, cultural and human ties. I hope that we will have a dense dialogue on all topics of common interest and that we will work together to develop our numerous cooperations,” said the French Prime Minister.
